Consultation for Psychotherapists

Note: This page is designed and written for psychotherapists. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Consultation is an important aspect of continuing to grow as a quality therapist. Many therapists overlook this resource as they become more seasoned. Consultation can help you expand, deepen and refresh your work.
Whether with patients or consultees, I believe in the importance of attending to and exploring our feelings in the relational field.
Wendy Brown, MFT, CGP
I enjoy consulting to therapists and respect the shared learning process. I bring the perspective of a life-long learner to both my psychotherapy practice and consultation.
I approach the work with respect, thoughtfulness and full engagement, with a warm, informal style. I value and encourage creativity.
As a relational, psychodynamically oriented psychotherapist, I think a lot about how we as therapists “make use of self” as our primary tool. I focus a lot on process versus content, which means inviting discussion about our connection. This includes when you feel understood as well as when you feel less connected. Practicing this kind of direct communication with me will help improve your communication in other relationships. Whether with patients or consultees, I believe in the importance of attending to and exploring our feelings in the relational field.
One of my favorite books is Janina Fisher’s Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Internal Self-Alienation. I often recommend it to consultees. Her book has been exciting to read, taking my psychodynamic relational perspective to new depths! She describes a way of working with people via their parts of selves, working with the part that gets triggered rather than the trauma story which too often triggers and overwhelms a patient. Ms. Fisher teaches us how to help people develop a relationship with each part and become more competent in managing feelings and states of mind. Incorporating her ideas has been an invaluable addition to my ongoing practice of compassion, curiosity and most of all, an exciting and very profound and productive, healing way to work.
